Junior Archaeologist

Comox Valley, BC | Full-time, Permanent | $25-$35 per hour

The Opportunity

Baseline Archaeological Services is looking for a Junior Archaeologist to join our growing team in the Comox Valley. This is a full-time, permanent position with a mix of field and office work and the opportunity to develop experience across the full range of archaeological consulting.

Candidates must be based in the Comox Valley or willing to relocate to the area at their own expense.

Our work takes us to a variety of sites, environments, communities, and projects across Vancouver Island and coastal British Columbia. Whether you’re excavating in the field, working with a client, building a map, or contributing to a report, you’ll have the opportunity to see how the pieces of an archaeological project come together.

Why Baseline?

We work as a team, and everyone pitches in.

One of the things that sets Baseline apart is the breadth of experience our team members can gain. We don’t believe in keeping junior staff in one lane. As you develop your skills, you’ll have opportunities to take part in fieldwork, research, mapping, data management, lab work, reporting, and project planning.

Our projects also vary, which means you’ll work with different clients, communities, project types, and environments.

We’re a fun, down-to-earth team with a strong focus on safety. We work hard, look out for each other, and believe that work should fit into your life, not the other way around. Most of our work is local to Vancouver Island, so you’ll usually be home at the end of the day.

There is occasional overnight and camp-based work. It is not a large part of our workload, but it is part of archaeological consulting and is shared across the team. We expect everyone to participate when required rather than having away work consistently fall to the same people.

Your Role

Reporting to a Field Supervisor, Field Director and/or Project Manager, you’ll contribute to a variety of archaeological projects, including:

  • Conducting and assisting with archaeological assessments, including excavation, forest surveys, shovel testing, and machine monitoring
  • Supporting fieldwork planning, logistics, and equipment maintenance
  • Maintaining accurate field notes, photographs, and other project records
  • Conducting background research using online databases and reference materials
  • Assisting with data management, report writing, and site form submissions
  • Creating maps from geospatial data using ArcMap GIS
  • Assisting with laboratory work, including sorting lithic and faunal materials
  • Working respectfully with local First Nations, community members, clients, contractors, and other project personnel
  • Following the requirements and standards of local First Nations, the BC Archaeology Branch, the BCER, and other regulators
  • Contributing to a safe and respectful work environment both in the field and office

What You Bring

  • A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Archaeology or Anthropology
  • Previous archaeological field experience is an asset
  • A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence
  • An interest in developing a career in archaeological consulting
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail
  • A willingness to learn, take on new responsibilities, and contribute wherever needed
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • The ability to work in both the field and the office environments
  • Willingness to participate in occasional overnight and camp-based assignments

What We Offer

$25–$35 per hour ($52,000-$72,800 annual equivalent), depending on experience, plus:

  • Comprehensive benefits package
  • Annual field gear allowance
  • Professional development and advancement opportunities
  • Primarily local work on Vancouver Island
  • Limited overnight and camp-based assignments
  • A workplace that values teamwork, safety, and work/life balance
